Begin with measurements

Choose a garment that fits comfortably and compare its dimensions with those of the costume under discussion. Measure it flat without stretching, recording chest, waist, hip, shoulder width, sleeve length and overall length where relevant. Label body measurements separately, use consistent units and mention any layers that need to fit underneath.

Think about the part you will play: reaching, sitting, bending and quick changes may call for different amounts of room. A familiar size label is only a starting point. Ask about alterations before making arrangements, and establish whether they are possible, permitted and separately charged. Never adjust a hired garment without agreement.

Check the complete picture

Request a list of included pieces. Collars, caps and other accessories in an illustrative image do not automatically form part of an offered outfit. Confirm how detachable items fasten and whether anything else is needed to wear the costume as intended.

Ask for material and lining details, along with current condition notes. Look for information about closures, wear, repairs and decorative components. Those details can affect comfort and handling as much as the outer silhouette does.

Plan for careful handling

Support clothing by its main structure and handle ribbons, points and trims gently. Follow instructions for the actual garment rather than choosing a cleaning method from its appearance. Water, solvents, heat and steam can affect fabrics and decorations differently. Ask before treating marks, pressing a section or attempting a repair.

Agree the arrangements

For rental inquiries, include rehearsal dates as well as performances. Confirm the rental period, delivery or collection, packing and return arrangements before agreeing an order.
